In their own words
My family and I love doing this! We try very hard all year long not to drive around so much but we make an extra effort during Curb Your Car Week! Thanks so much for doing this.
I get better mileage than what I read on the chart. 25 city and 35 long distance. I slow down approaching red lights rather than maintaining my speed and braking. On the thruway, I drive 60 rather than 65 and use cruise control except in heavy traffic.
I am trying to make curb my car week every week!
I was excited to be a part of the project. The weather was disappointing as I planned on walking to Wegmans for every trip that week, but the rain and cold made that more difficult. I will, however, try to continue walking to Wegmans for at least half of the trips I make there!
I have been car-pooling for five years with a friend of mine that works here at MCC. We live in Spencerport. Sometimes we alternate weeks and sometimes every other day.
I am a die hard commuter and ride my bicycle year round — only taking the city’s bus system when the weather is horrid and/or conditions are not safe. I ride with studded tires in the winter. I live in the heart of Rochester and work in the center of the city. All of what I want or need is within a bicycle ride or a bus ride away. More should be done for us bicyclists who CHOOSE to be car less.
I guess I “cheated” just a little bit — because I would have commuted the 20 miles round trip to work even without Curb Your Car Week on Thursday and Friday. However, the event was incentive to ride on Monday and Wednesday, when the rain would otherwise have tempted me to drive.
Thank you for keeping all of us aware!
Since September as a family we have committed to having our kids take the 22 bus or bike from North Landing Road to their afterschool activities that are located near Penfield Four Corners/Penfield High School. The kids have cooporated and we save 20 miles per week. I also pick up two kids with one trip. That is another 5 miles per week. Not only does it save us fuel but it saves the chauffeur mom lots of time. I only wish there were more busses so that we could make a larger committment. But these are things we are doing not just for this week — but for always!
Its a good idea that will hopefully pick up more steam every year!
I rode my bike to work on Friday. I liked using my own energy reserves instead of a dead dinosaur’s stored energy.
I love that you guys are doing this. Inspirational.
